Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel
Maximalist design-forward luxury with a distinctly Californian looseness. Bold color, vintage Mexican modernism, Moroccan tilework, and Spanish-Portuguese culinary influence — every space is intentionally layered but never feels cluttered. The rooftop draws a fashionable DTLA crowd; the lobby functions as a creative living room.
Book the Basketball Suite for the acoustics alone — the original wooden court floors and double-height ceilings make it special. The custom basketball hoop is a conversation piece.
Why It Matters
Michelin Key Award 2025 winner. Earned a 2023 LA Conservancy Preservation Award for its meticulous adaptive reuse of the 1926 Commercial Club of Southern California. The two signature suites — one built from the original basketball court (original wood floors and painted play lines intact), one wrapping the original YWCA indoor pool — are genuinely one-of-a-kind in the hotel world. Named on Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List and GQ's Most Stylish Hotels on the Planet.
A 147-room luxury boutique hotel in a 1926 Renaissance Revival landmark on Downtown LA's Broadway Corridor. Designer Kelly Wearstler worked over 100 handmade Moroccan-inspired tiles, vintage furnishings, and commissioned artwork into every corner — two suites are built inside the building's original basketball court and indoor pool. The result is somewhere between an art gallery, a members' club, and a proper California hotel.
