Book a room at the front of the house for the best Spey Valley views

Why It Matters

The hotel's whisky credentials are the real draw. The Still bar holds over 750 bottles including bottles from nearly every Speyside distillery, rare Islays, Lowlands, and international expressions — with a 40-year-old Macallan and a 1979 Imperial among the standouts. Two members of the Murray family were named Spirit of Speyside Ambassadors of the Year in 2022. It's also a Tablet Hotels member.

The Dowans Hotel is a family-run boutique hotel in a grand 1888 Victorian mansion perched above the village of Aberlour, with views over the River Spey and the valley beyond. It sits dead centre on Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail, with over 50 distilleries within easy reach — some walkable. The Still bar stocks 750+ whiskies including a rare 40-year-old Macallan, and Restaurant 57 sources its venison, fish, and lobster from within a 30-minute drive. Sixteen individually styled rooms, named after local distilleries, range from snug singles to lavish Junior Suites with standalone baths.
