Domaine des Étangs
Rural slow-luxury château retreat. Art-forward but unpretentious — think family home more than grand hotel. Guests come for walking, rowing, cycling, and reading, not buzzy bars or scene-setting.
The 3-course market lunch at Dyades (Wed–Fri) runs from €38 — extraordinary value for a one-star kitchen
Why It Matters
The largest five-star hotel in mainland France by land area — three times the size of New York's Central Park. Ranked #1 Hotel in France and #11 Best Hotel in the World by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice 2023. The estate hosts a major contemporary art collection (Lee Ufan, Tomás Saraceno, Yves Klein) curated by owner Garance Primat, daughter of the late French industrialist Didier Primat. No resort fee — pools, bikes, boats, tennis, and trails all included.
A 13th-century stone château on 2,500 forested acres (1,000 hectares) deep in the Charente countryside. Once the private holiday estate of the Primat family, it became a hotel in 2015 and joined Auberge Collection in April 2023. The 29 rooms are spread across the main castle, a converted longère farmhouse, and six standalone farmstead cottages — each one different enough to feel like a separate property. There is a one-Michelin-starred restaurant in the former stables, a spa inside a 17th-century walnut-oil mill, and an outdoor contemporary art trail that rivals a serious gallery.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A self-guided walking trail through 2,500 acres of protected nature that incorporates significant sculpture works and site-specific art installations by artists including Lee Ufan, Tomás Saraceno, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Ugo Rondinone, Richard Long, and Tony Cragg. Free for guests; available to non-guests by appointment.
Complimentary bicycles for exploring the estate's 2,500 acres of forests, pastures, and pond-side trails. The scale of the property makes cycling the most efficient way to get around.
Catch-and-release fishing on the estate's ponds. Equipment available.
A full tennis court built on a floating platform on one of the estate's ponds. Available all day, included in the room rate. One of the most photographed features of the property.
Expert-led walking tours covering the property's history from its 13th-century origins through the Primat family's ownership. Free for guests on reservation only; contact the Domaine to book.
Guided walk through the estate's 2,500 sq m certified organic spiral-shaped potager with the Domaine's gardener. You'll see what herbs, root vegetables, flowers, and seasonal produce are growing — likely the same ingredients that will appear on your plate at Dyades that evening.
Horse riding available on the estate's expansive grounds.
An 18th-century dairy barn converted into a world-class gallery space hosting rotating exhibitions curated by major figures in the contemporary art world. Past shows have featured Tomás Saraceno, Yves Klein, and Claudia Paetzold. Also houses two libraries — one of pre-1920 books, one contemporary — designed by Raphaël Navot. No temporary exhibition in 2025, but permanent outdoor works remain accessible.
A majestic attic games room occupying almost the entire top floor of the château. Packed with billiards, foosball, board games, puppets, costumes from the Primat family's collection of old travel trunks, and a telescope for stargazing. Beloved by children and adults alike.
Guided seasonal mushroom foraging in the estate's forests. A natural pairing with the kitchen's hyper-local ethos.
A curated program of world-class healers, thought leaders, and wellness experts visiting the Domaine for immersive retreats and experiences.
Complimentary wooden rowing boats on the estate's seven interconnected ponds. One of the most evocative experiences on the property — the same ponds the Primat children grew up rowing across.
The estate's 600-strong Limousin cattle herd roams the pastures, alongside deer, herons, and innumerable dragonflies (the Domaine's emblem). Guided walks with the estate's forest wardens are available.
