Domaine de Locguénolé
A heritage French estate with a post-renovation polish. The château's interiors lean hard into the 'India Route' theme — think colonial four-poster beds, richly colored fabrics, and antique furniture that could plausibly have come off a trading ship. The Manoir is rawer and more stripped-back, with stone and metal. Le Club brings leather and equestrian detail to rooms carved out of the old stables. Outside, 25 hectares of managed parkland, a kitchen garden, resident goats and chickens, orchards, and a private river pontoon keep things grounded in something genuinely rural.
Reserve L'Inattendu as soon as you book your room — it fills up well in advance and is closed Sunday and Monday
Why It Matters
The first Relais & Châteaux property in Brittany (member since 1970). L'Inattendu holds one Michelin star and is led by chef Yann Maget (Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2023). The estate also offers genuinely unusual stays: Le Caprice, a converted midcentury sailboat with a private rooftop terrace, and Coucou, a former henhouse turned suite. Newly awarded 5-star classification in 2025 after completing a major 3-year renovation.
Domaine de Locguénolé is the original Relais & Châteaux property in Brittany — a title it has held since 1970. The estate sits on 25 hectares of ancient forest above the Blavet river estuary in southern Brittany, about 15 minutes from Lorient. Three historic buildings house 46 rooms and suites: a 19th-century château, an 18th-century manor, and Le Club, the converted former stables. A sweeping three-year renovation completed in 2023 by architect Christophe Bachmann gave everything a new life, with interiors built around a rich 'India Route' theme — a nod to Lorient's history as a port for the French East India Company. But the biggest draw for many guests is L'Inattendu, a one-Michelin-star restaurant under a spectacular glass-roof conservatory, led by Yann Maget, named Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 2023.
