Ask about frog-catching in the moat — boat and fishing rod provided, catch-and-release style.

Why It Matters

A Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels–selected B&B with just five individually decorated rooms, each named after a garden style. Listed by Le Fooding. Rated 5/5 on TripAdvisor and holds 5 épis (the top rating) from Gîtes de France. The estate has belonged to the Veillon family for over a century.

A former feudal estate in the Charente countryside, Domaine de la Partoucie spans buildings from the 15th and 18th centuries — a 15th-century castle wing (once a fortified manor with corner towers and a moat) and a classically-built 18th-century main house. Just five rooms. Hosts Fabienne and Michel Veillon have spent over 20 years restoring this family property, and it shows: antique furniture sits alongside contemporary touches, wicker armchairs, dried flowers and panoramic garden wallpapers. The grounds are the real draw — 16 hectares of park, a saltwater pool in the old orchard, a fishing pond, sheep grazing among century-old trees, a real sheepfold, and a vegetable patch. Breakfast is included and genuinely excellent. No on-site restaurant, but Confolens is 10 minutes by car.
