Domaine De La Bretesche
Grand French countryside estate — formal yet genuinely relaxed. Stone courtyards, castle views across a lake, and the kind of greenery that actually absorbs sound. Golf and spa crowd, romantic couples, and families who want space rather than a theme park.
Request a lake-view room to wake up to the château reflected in the water — worth the upgrade
Why It Matters
One of only a handful of French hotel estates where you sleep inside a working 15th-century castle complex (the outbuildings, not the castle itself — the château is privately divided into apartments). Add a 1-Michelin-star restaurant, a 6,015m Henri Cotton-designed golf course ranked among France's most beautiful, and a Cinq Mondes spa under a glass roof, and this is a legitimate destination resort rather than just a countryside hotel.
A 15th-century château estate in the Brière Regional Natural Park, with rooms and villas housed in the former outbuildings — all facing the castle, the lake, or the 200-hectare grounds. This is a full French-country resort: Michelin-starred restaurant, a glass-roofed spa, an 18-hole Henri Cotton golf course, and a permaculture kitchen garden that feeds the kitchen. Renovated in 2025 by architect Stéphanie Decurey, blending antique woodwork, Ligne Roset furniture and Dedar textiles throughout.

Directed by David Lanta, with Trackman 4 technology. Individual and group lessons for all levels, from total beginners to experienced players. Located steps from the cottages.
A regional golf pass giving access to other courses in the area including La Baule, Nantes-Vigneux, and Saint-Jean-de-Monts.
Bikes available for exploring the 200-hectare estate, the château park, and the surrounding Brière Regional Natural Park. Included in several packages.
The Brière Regional Natural Park is directly accessible — by boat through the reed canals, on foot, or by bike. Traditional thatched cottages, migratory birds, and wild marshland. The hotel team can help organize excursions.
200 hectares of private parkland with marked trails. Deer are regularly spotted in the forest around the golf course cottages. Walking to the château edge along the lake is a guest favourite.
The estate's kitchen garden, grown using permaculture principles, supplies both restaurants. Guests can walk through and arrange guided visits.
Traditional French pétanque and the Finnish lawn bowling game Mölkky are available in the grounds.
On-site tennis court available to hotel guests.
