Dimora Palanca Boutique & SPA
Aristocratic art-house meets contemporary Italian design. Historic bones — ceiling frescoes, stuccoed walls, wrought-iron handrails — paired with sleek modern furniture and original contemporary art throughout. Intimate, quietly luxurious, with no pool but a jasmine-scented secret garden instead.
Ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the courtyard garden — the jasmine scent in spring/summer is worth it
Why It Matters
Listed in the Michelin Guide. One of the very few hotels in Florence where every room has genuinely unique, hand-painted ceiling frescoes commissioned by the original aristocratic owners. The building dates from when Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy (1865–1871), and the restoration team uncovered pavé flooring, stuccoes, and frescoes rather than designing them from scratch.
A 19th-century aristocratic villa turned 5-star boutique hotel, Dimora Palanca sits on about 1,600 square meters just a few blocks from Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. The Palanca family built it in the 1860s when Florence was briefly Italy's capital, commissioning local artists to paint one-of-a-kind ceiling frescoes, murals, and stuccoes that still cover most of the rooms and common spaces today. Tuscan architect Stefano Bibiani led the restoration, keeping the original parquet floors, marble staircases, and grand columns intact, while interior designer Paolo Dovichi layered in contemporary Italian design — think Maxalto and Flos — plus 40 of his own artworks. The result is a place that genuinely feels like staying in a collector's private home rather than a hotel.
