The Beachfront Mijora
Modernist-vernacular beachfront villas. Deliberately minimal and zen — think quiet design conversation with nature rather than resort indulgence. The ethos is 'simplicity over luxury.' Architect-designed, sustainability-certified (Green Key), and woven into the local community.
The Tsumugi Suite Villa is across the road from the main beachfront cluster — it's on the second floor and has a 10-meter-wide glass wall overlooking the sea. Worth requesting specifically if you want the most architecturally distinctive room.
Why It Matters
Winner of the 2021 Good Design Gold Award (Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award) — the first ever for Amami Oshima. Designed by architect Yasuhiro Yamashita of Atelier Tekuto, the project isn't just a hotel; it's a community development initiative preserving island culture, traditional boatbuilding, and the Oshima Tsumugi silk craft. The Tsumugi Suite (opened 2023) integrates authentic traditional textile materials into its walls, tiles, and door handles.
Twenty standalone beachfront villas on the subtropical UNESCO World Natural Heritage island of Amami Oshima, each one a live-in argument for what architecture can do when it stops trying to dominate its landscape. Concrete origami exteriors support yakisugi (charred cedar) roofs drawn from Amamian granary tradition, while floor-to-ceiling glass — the largest panes shippable to the island — dissolve the boundary between bedroom and ocean. No TVs. No partitions blocking the view. Just you, the sea, and a kitchen stocked with whatever you picked up at the local market.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The beach in front of the property is a short step from your villa terrace. On clear nights, the lack of light pollution on this part of the island makes it one of the better stargazing spots in southern Japan. A triangular rock visible offshore is a particularly striking sunset landmark.
Direct beach access from villa terraces — some just 10 seconds walk from the waterline. The sea in front of the property is Kasari Bay, known locally as 'Amami Blue.' Snorkelling with reef fish is possible directly off the beach.
Free bicycles for guests to explore the local Kasari area, including Akakina village and surrounding coastline.
A sunset cruise aboard a traditionally-built wooden catamaran. The boat was constructed specifically to preserve and pass down the near-extinct wooden boatbuilding techniques of Amami Oshima — at the time of building, only one craftsman on the island still held the knowledge. The cruise is exclusively for hotel guests.
Guided kayaking through Amami Oshima's mangrove forests, arranged through the Denpaku activities program.
Hands-on workshop in Amami's most famous traditional craft — Oshima Tsumugi silk, a textile revered in Japan for over 1,300 years. Arranged through the Denpaku activities program.
Paddleboarding at sunrise or during the day directly from the property's beachfront.
