Why It Matters
One of the rare truly cool design hotels in the Austrian Alps, featured in Condé Nast Traveler, Monocle's The Escapist, and Vogue. Krohne and Houzer turned a faded Belle Époque building into a cultural gravitational point for Bad Gastein's revival — complete with in-house cinema, rotating art exhibitions, the SOMMER.FRISCHE.KUNST summer arts festival, and a mountaintop ski bar at 7,000+ feet in nearby Sportgastein.
A 32-room Belle Époque boutique hotel in the center of Bad Gastein, owned and operated for 15-plus years by Olaf Krohne and Jason Houzer. The original turn-of-the-century Italian building got a considered overhaul: original marble and parquet flooring stayed, but Venetian and Baroque decorative elements were layered in alongside contemporary design classics and vintage furniture. The result draws a cosmopolitan crowd — boho-chic Berliners and Hamburgers, adventure-seekers, and art-world types — who come for the skiing, stay for the bar.
