Convent Square Lisbon
Heritage-meets-contemporary. Monastic calm in the middle of a busy city. Think hushed cloister courtyard, fire pits, original stonework, and blush-pink marble bathrooms — serious design without being flashy about it.
Book a cloister-facing room if you want quiet — street-facing Cosy Rooms are the most compact and can pick up city noise.
Why It Matters
It occupies the actual restored Convento de S. Domingos (1242), one of Lisbon's most historically significant buildings. The open-air cloister — complete with sculptural work by Pedro Cabrita Reis and paintings by Pedro Calapez — is genuinely a one-of-a-kind gathering space no other Lisbon hotel can replicate. It is also only the second Vignette Collection property to open in Europe and is nominated for the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2026.
Convent Square is a 13th-century Dominican convent — originally commissioned by King Sancho II in 1242 — converted into a 117-room luxury hotel in the heart of Lisbon's Baixa district. It is built around a working open-air cloister, and walking through the entrance genuinely feels different from every other hotel in the city. The architecture was restored by GRCA with interiors designed by Artica, blending original vaulted ceilings, preserved 17th-century tiles, and pink marble bathrooms with thoroughly contemporary comfort.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A more structured version of the tea ceremony, offered as part of certain packages (such as Luxury Escapes). Includes tea tasting, a tea history tutorial, and the story of the convent's Dominican heritage.
Held every day at 5:00 PM in the lobby lounge. Guests blend their own daily infusion from a curated selection of herbs and leaves — a ritual inspired by the ancient healing practices of the Dominican monks who once lived here. The ceremony also traces Portugal's role in bringing tea to Europe, via Princess Catherine of Braganza in 1662. It is complimentary and open to guests.
The hotel hosts live music in the lounge and bar area. Musical events are programmed periodically; the bar particularly features live performances alongside tapas and cocktails.
A dedicated package for guests attending Lisbon music events, including a stay in a chosen room category, Wellness Centre access, power tea and yogurt with granola before the concert, and tea service with homemade cookies after.
The hotel's original open-air cloister is set up for guests to linger — plush outdoor furniture, fire pits, and a sculptural installation by acclaimed Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis. It is genuinely the most atmospheric outdoor space of any Lisbon city hotel.
