Companhia das Culturas
Rustic eco-design with an 'arte povera' sensibility — repurposed farm buildings, vintage furniture from different centuries, cork everywhere. Quiet and intentional. Feels more like staying with thoughtful friends than checking into a hotel.
Book the hamam separately even as a day visitor — it's open to non-guests and reportedly the best in the Algarve
Why It Matters
One of Portugal's few genuinely functioning agrotourism properties where the farm actually feeds you. The Cork Box yoga studio — a former threshing machine garage entirely lined with cork — is an art installation guests do downward dog inside. The on-site hamam is reported to be the only traditional Roman-Arabic-style bath in the Algarve. Everything edible comes from the farm or within a few kilometres.
A working organic farm seven generations in one Portuguese family — olives, quince, figs, oranges, and now guests. Owners Eglantina and Francisco turned the ruined agricultural complex into a 6-room, 4-apartment escape designed by architect Pedro Ressano Garcia, where whitewashed walls, cork accents, and polished cement floors take the place of minibar menus and flat-screen TVs. No television anywhere. The food comes mostly from the property itself.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Bikes available on site suited to different terrain types, for exploring the surrounding farm, nature reserve, and coastal tracks towards Praia Verde (1.5km).
The property provides its own maps of local footpaths through the 40-hectare farm ecosystem of stone pines, cork oaks, carob trees, olives, and fruit orchards. Trails connect directly to the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marsh Natural Reserve, home to over 150 bird species.
In partnership with local operators, the hotel can arrange sailing trips on the Ria Formosa lagoon with access to deserted barrier island beaches. Also good for bird watching and kayaking.
Depending on the season, guests can participate in farm harvests — picking olives, figs, citrus, aromatic herbs, and greens — as well as their transformation and preservation. Occasional workshops on wild food, bird watching, and organic farming techniques.
The property regularly hosts workshops on art, architecture, design, gastronomy, yoga retreats, and team-building events. The Cork Box and the seminar dining room (12-person capacity) are used for groups of up to 40 people. Intimate weddings also hosted.
Group yoga classes held in the Cork Box — a former threshing machine garage entirely lined in natural cork. Complimentary sessions on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10am. Private or group sessions bookable at reception for €20 per person (minimum 2 people). Also used for retreats, meditation, sound healing, and workshops.
