Maalifushi
Clean, contemporary island resort with a wellness-forward sensibility. Quiet but not sterile — strong on water sports and active experiences, not just lounging. Japanese-influenced minimalism meets barefoot tropical living.
Ask for a Water Villa on the sunset side — west-facing views at dusk are worth the specific request.
Why It Matters
The only resort on Thaa Atoll — one of the least developed atolls in the Maldives — which means fewer crowds and genuinely untouched reef diving (only 33 sites have been officially chronicled). The Tropicsurf partnership gives surfers access to consistent, world-class breaks. COMO Shambhala Retreat's eight overwater treatment rooms are among the more impressive spa setups in the country. The COMO Residence sleeps 12 and has its own full kitchen and media room.
COMO Maalifushi is the first and only resort on the Thaa Atoll, one of the Maldives' more remote southern atolls. The 60-minute seaplane ride from Malé is genuinely part of the experience — you arrive having already seen the archipelago from above, which sets the tone. Fifty-nine villas and suites, designed by Japanese architect Koichiro Ikebuchi, sit over the water or among tropical gardens, built from teak, New Zealand pine, and Kajan-thatched roofs with floor-to-ceiling windows that make the ocean feel like a room. The COMO brand brings serious surf access (via Tropicsurf), an award-winning overwater spa, three restaurants, and the kind of kids' programme that actually keeps children busy — making this one of the stronger bets in the Maldives for families who don't want to sacrifice quality.

Gourmet picnic lunch on a secluded sandbank, with chilled beverages and desserts. Available as family or couples' format.
A curated breakfast tray floating in your private villa pool, paired with two glasses of Champagne. Available to book via WhatsApp.
Private candlelit dinner on the beach or poolside deck, set up and served by COMO butlers. Available for couples or private celebrations.
Guided catamaran sail around the lagoon with the captain. Included in Simply COMO all-inclusive.
Only 33 dive sites in the Thaa Atoll have been officially documented — meaning most reefs are genuinely unexplored. Suitable for all levels. Marine biologist on staff runs weekly talks.
Complimentary use throughout the stay. Guided tours also available with professional watersports guides.
Guided snorkel safaris to turtle sites and reef locations. Complimentary snorkel gear. Weekly marine biologist talks. Simply COMO all-inclusive includes guided turtle and reef snorkelling safaris.
COMO Maalifushi has partnered with Tropicsurf for guided surfing excursions and lessons. The Thaa Atoll delivers some of the most consistent and less-crowded surf conditions in the Maldives, suitable for all levels.
Motorised water sports from the Marine Sports Centre for more adventurous guests — wakeboarding, waterskiing, and tubing around the lagoon.
Open-air movie screenings under the night sky with bean bags and warm popcorn.
In partnership with Seamarc marine consultancy — guests plant coral frames on the seafloor to encourage reef growth. Popular with families and younger guests.
Watch wild dolphin pods migrating through the atoll at sunset, with Champagne and gourmet canapés. Included in the Simply COMO all-inclusive package.
Offshore game fishing from the Marine Sports Centre boat. Blue marlin, large yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and sailfish are the target species.
Sites within 30 minutes of the resort. Titan triggerfish, giant trevally, red snapper, grouper, and more. Popular with serious anglers — the Thaa Atoll reefs see minimal fishing pressure.
An entire uninhabited private island — Lavadhoo — to yourself for the night, with luxury touches set up by the COMO team. One of the genuinely rare experiences in the Maldives. Advance booking essential.
On-site padel court for singles or doubles — the racket sport combining elements of tennis and squash. Complimentary access included in stays.
Dedicated Play Space for ages 4–12, open daily 9am–6pm. Runs purposeful, child-directed activities including marine education, coral propagation, and nature-based play.
Traditional Maldivian dhoni with lounge-style cushions, Champagne, and sunset views across the atoll.
