Why It Matters
Winner of UNESCO's Most Excellent Project in the Asia Pacific Heritage Award (2000). Named one of 10 greatest mansions in the world by Lonely Planet (2011). The mansion survived demolition in 1989 only because a small group of Penang conservationists bought it and spent six years restoring it using traditional methods. The restoration set a legal precedent banning hammer piling near heritage buildings in Penang — a ruling that still stands.
A 130-year-old indigo-blue mansion turned boutique hotel, right in the middle of George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 1896 and 1904 by Cheong Fatt Tze — the Hakka tycoon known as the 'Rockefeller of the East' — the building has 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases, and 220 vernacular timber louvre windows. Only 18 of those rooms are available to guests. The mansion doubles as a working museum and has appeared on screen in 'Crazy Rich Asians' and the Oscar-winning 'Indochine.'

The Han Suites
The grandest rooms in the mansion, set at the front corners of the building. Two suites: Mandarin (East Wing, overlooking the pool and Oriental garden, named for Cheong's recognition as Mandarin of the Highest Order by Empress Dowager) and Yantai (West Wing, named for the town where Cheong founded the Chang Yu winery). Each includes a large master bedroom, an elegant sitting room with a daybed, and an en-suite bathroom with a claw-footed bathtub and shower. Spacious enough for a small family.

The Liang Collection
Located on the ground and first floors of the East (feminine) Wing, or the first floor of the West (masculine) Wing. Cosy and antique-heavy, each room is meticulously furnished with artworks inherited from Cheong Fatt Tze's family. Individual named rooms include Feng Shui (with a private open terrace), Chang Yu (named after Cheong's legendary Shandong winery), Hakka (tribute to Cheong's ethnic roots), Fragrant Poem, Batavia, Scholar, Towkay, Shangtung, Peony, and Taipu. No direct pool access from this tier.

The Ming Collection
Ground-floor rooms with direct access to the outdoor pool and Oriental garden. The most coveted category for guests who want to step straight from their room into the water. Each room is furnished with personal antique collections and artworks from the Cheong Fatt Tze family, plus modern touches like espresso machines. Individual named rooms include Escoy (featuring a carved Chinese screen donated by the Eastern Smelting Company), Lean Hwa (named after the mansion's original street name, 'flowing street of water lotuses'), Sinkeh (twin beds, a tribute to Chinese immigrant arrival), and Nanyang (named after the 'South Seas' region where Cheong made his fortune).

Only two of these exist — one in the East Wing, one in the West Wing — both set on the ground floor beside the mansion's famous cast-iron spiral staircases imported from Glasgow. The major draw: deep jacuzzis in each room. The Old Kitchen suite features a repurposed antique kitchen stove as a console and has pool access. The 50s Room has an eclectic, post-war Western aesthetic (think: a deliberate quirk in the heritage interior) and also has direct pool and garden access.

A 45-minute guided tour of the reception hall, the famed central courtyard, and the museum exhibition on the second floor. Maximum 24 people per tour. Tours in English by default; Mandarin, Japanese, and other languages available with prior arrangement. Covers the architectural history, feng shui principles, and life story of Cheong Fatt Tze. Tickets often sell out — book online via Globaltix in advance.
Private guided tours available daily between 12pm–2pm with 3 days advance notice. RM350 for groups of up to 12 people, or RM25 per person for groups of 13–20.
Contactless self-guided tour using the SmartGuide app on your own smartphone with personal earphones. Covers the mansion facade, main lobby, courtyard, ground level, and upstairs exhibitions. Can be done at your own pace, in-person (11am–6pm daily) or even offsite/virtually. Maximum 10 guests per hour in-person.
Al fresco live music performances in the garden under the mango tree. Runs Wednesday to Saturday, 7:30pm–11pm. Free to attend for diners and drinkers at the cafe.
