Chebeague Island Inn
Historic New England coastal inn with a deliberate low-tech, slow-down ethos. Think wraparound porch Adirondack chairs, ocean breezes instead of A/C, and s'mores by the fire pit at night.
Ask for an ocean view room on the second floor — the west-facing sunset views over Casco Bay are a genuine highlight.
Why It Matters
One of the last surviving historic summer inns on the Maine island circuit, and the only lodging on Chebeague Island. The ferry-only access is a real moat — once you're there, you're genuinely off the grid. The restaurant punches well above its weight, sourcing from the island's own farm, oyster company, and lobsterman.
Built in the 1880s as the Hillcrest Hotel, burned and rebuilt in 1925, then fully renovated in 2004, the Chebeague Island Inn sits on 2.5 acres of west-facing oceanfront on Maine's largest Casco Bay island. The whole point here is disconnection: no TVs, no in-room phones, and the only way in is by ferry from Cousins Island. Public spaces lean park-lodge — fireplace, wood, wraparound porch — but the rooms are cleaner and more polished than the exterior suggests, with white walls, local artworks, and Frette Italian linens. Open May through mid-October only.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Hamilton Beach is a 10-minute walk from the inn. The inn provides beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas. For something more adventurous, take the inn's shuttle to The Hook and walk across the sandbar at low tide to Little Chebeague island — a local favorite.
Complimentary beach cruiser bikes available for all guests to explore the island. Chebeague is 3.5 miles long — a flat, easy ride around the outer loop.
Private boat charters can be arranged to explore the coastline and surrounding Casco Bay islands. Ask the front desk for recommendations and bookings.
The inn can prepare boxed lunches for guests heading to the beach or out exploring the island.
The island's Historical Society houses collections, photographs, and exhibits on Chebeague's history. A short trip from the inn — the gift shop is worth a stop.
Clay tennis courts available for guest use.
A nine-hole links-style course directly adjacent to the inn, with ocean views from every hole. One of the more scenic courses in New England. No tee times required for individuals. Inn guests receive a discounted rate — just show your room key at the pro shop.
Golf carts available from third-party local operator Dyl's Carts, hourly, daily, or weekly. A fun way to cover more ground on the island.
Corn hole, bocce, and frisbee on the front lawn. Nothing fancy — but exactly right for a slow island afternoon.
Each evening as the sun sets, the inn lights the fire pit for guests. Beer and wine available for adults. S'mores for everyone.
