Chateau Marmont
Old Hollywood Gothic. Faded grandeur. Discreet and deliberately timeless — faded oriental rugs, velvet couches, beveled mirrors, brass candelabras, vintage teak furniture and 1930s tiled bathrooms. Not a hotel for tourists. A hotel for people who want to disappear.
Dinner at the restaurant is essentially reserved for hotel guests — if you're not staying, book early and be patient, or come for breakfast or lunch when the patio is open to the public.
Why It Matters
One of Hollywood's most legendary properties. Opened in 1929, modeled after a Loire Valley chateau, and acquired by André Balazs in 1990 who restored it while preserving its character. Clark Gable and Jean Harlow had their affair here. Howard Hughes surveilled the pool from his penthouse. John Belushi overdosed in Bungalow 3. Jim Morrison jumped off the roof. Led Zeppelin rode motorcycles through the lobby. It received the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2024.
The Chateau Marmont has been doing sin and discretion since 1929, and it's still very good at both. Modeled after the Loire Valley's Chateau Amboise — gothic vaulted ceilings, ivy-draped exterior, dark wood throughout — it sits perched above Sunset Boulevard like an elderly French castle that never quite made it home. André Balazs has owned it since 1990 and his genius move was to restore it while making it look like he hadn't touched a thing. The 63 rooms, suites, cottages and bungalows are all different; some are 300-square-foot standard rooms with faded carpets and midcentury furniture, others are 3,800-square-foot bungalows with private gardens and working fireplaces. The whole point is privacy. Staff have seen it all and it takes a lot to shock them.

How you'll actually spend your days.
This is, frankly, one of the main activities. The patio restaurant has historically been one of LA's best spots for A-list sightings. Keep your phone in your pocket — photography is heavily discouraged — but the people watching is world-class.
The hills directly behind the hotel offer easy walking access. Staff recommend this over the gym, and they're not wrong.
Most room categories come with fully equipped kitchens featuring vintage midcentury gas cookers. Anthony Bourdain famously used his bungalow kitchen every morning for scrambled eggs, coffee and newspapers on the terrace. Staff will help you get the vintage appliances running if needed.
The heated outdoor pool is small — it won't make you feel like you're at a resort — but it's set among lush tropical gardens and open 24 hours. Weekend afternoons a small poolside bar is set up. Weekdays, order room service to the pool deck. Bungalow guests have direct garden access.
