Chateau le Cagnard
Medieval castle romance meets Provençal art history. Intimate, slightly theatrical, genuinely historic. The kind of place where the lobby fireplace dates to the 14th century and the staff knows your name by morning.
Book a Junior Suite or above for a balcony — the village-street-view Superior rooms are charming but tight at 14-20 m²
Why It Matters
Built into the actual city wall of a 13th-century fortified village. Historically a haunt for Brigitte Bardot and Greta Garbo. The restaurant has a sliding roof of 200 hand-painted medieval panels that opens to the sky. Each room is named after and decorated in tribute to a specific painter associated with the village. SLH member. Currently run by Swedish restaurateurs Axel Ohlson and Anton Surtell, who bring Nordic sensibility to the French Riviera kitchen.
A 13th-century stone château built directly into the medieval ramparts of Haut-de-Cagnes — one of the best-preserved hilltop villages on the Côte d'Azur. Thirty rooms and suites named after painters who lived or passed through the village (Renoir, Soutine, Modigliani, Picasso) come with original wooden beams, period furnishings, and views ranging from the cobblestone alleys below to the shimmering Mediterranean beyond. The restaurant's retractable ceiling — 200 hand-painted panels that slide back to reveal open sky — is the kind of thing you have to see to believe.
