Chateau de Saint Georges
Intimate owner-run château B&B with genuine historical character. Tastefully decorated rather than over-restored. Jean-Luc's art (described as Dali-esque) hangs through the ground floor. Quiet enough that you may be the only guests.
Book the table d'hôtes dinner in advance — it does not run every night and is the highlight of many stays
Why It Matters
Selected by both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels, which is unusual for a five-room chambres d'hôtes. The table d'hôtes — Maria's seasonal Franco-Italian cooking using produce from the kitchen garden, paired with Sancerre and Menetou-Salon wines — is what guests rave about most.
A 18th-century château sitting on 28 hectares of woods and meadows outside Bourges, run as a hands-on B&B by artist-designer Jean-Luc Charpagne and his wife Maria. Five individually decorated rooms named after musical terms — Aria, Opéra, Symphonie, Prélude, Concerto — stretch between the original 18th-century longère wing with its period woodwork and a newer annexe with antique-style furnishings. The property sits on foundations that go back to a 10th-century fortified castle; remnants include a spiral staircase from 1160 and a Roman boundary stone in the woods.
