Chateau de la Treyne
Aristocratic and historic but genuinely warm. Antique-filled salons lit by candlelight sit alongside a 20-metre heated pool and a modern elevator discreetly fitted into the ancient stonework. Period grandeur without the frost.
Request a room with a direct Dordogne view — several rooms face the garden instead, which is pleasant but misses the drama of the cliff-side outlook.
Why It Matters
One of France's most authentic château-hotels, not a conversion pastiche. Henry IV stayed here before being crowned king. The WWII Louvre connection gives the Scribe room its name. Chef Stéphane Andrieux has held a Michelin star continuously since 2001 — nearly 25 years in the same kitchen — with pastry chef Marc Jean alongside him since 1995. The 300-hectare private estate means you genuinely feel alone in the valley.
A genuine 14th-century fortified château perched on a cliff directly above the Dordogne River, surrounded by 300 hectares of formal French gardens and private forest. This is a Relais & Châteaux property with 18 individually named rooms and suites, a Michelin-starred restaurant that has held its star since 2001, and a history so layered it sheltered Louvre masterpieces — including the famous Seated Scribe — during World War II. The Gombert family runs it with a warmth that keeps guests coming back: the family Labrador greets arrivals at the door, children get welcome kits with bathrobes and slippers, and dogs stay free.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The COPEYRE Canoe Base is a short distance from the château; a bus picks guests up from the estate entrance. Descents can start from Creysse or Meyronne depending on the time available, with a picnic hamper prepared by the chef to take on the river. Allow at least two hours for a descent with swimming stops.
Hundreds of hectares of private forest and landscaped gardens to wander, including boxwood-lined paths, truffle oaks, and century-old trees. The formal French gardens were designed by landscape architect Edouard André.
Fishing is available on the Dordogne from the château's grounds and surrounding areas.
A trail carved into the cliff directly above the Dordogne, historically used by postmen working the valley route. One of the best ways to see the château from the outside and the most dramatic walk accessible directly from the estate.
An 18-hole golf course in a panoramic hillside setting. The château arranges special green fees for guests.
A fast-surface tennis court within the 300-hectare estate grounds.
Hot air balloon rides over the Dordogne Valley, arranged by the hotel. One of the classic ways to see the valley's geography — the château's position becomes clear from the air.
A small Romanesque chapel on the estate available for private ceremonies, weddings, or events.
A 20-metre heated overflow pool set within the wooded estate parkland. Open during the hotel season.
The estate's forest of gall oaks and hornbeams is truffle country, ideal for winter hunts. The property connects to the Causses du Quercy National Natural Park.
