CHAO opened in 2016 inside the bones of the old Beijing City Hotel — a 1990-era tower that German firm gmp Architekten stripped back and reclad with a zig-zag curtain wall of angled glass and concrete panels, turning a dated 26-story block into one of Sanlitun's most recognizable skyline fixtures.
