Why It Matters
Grade II*-listed Victorian château modelled on Loire Valley architecture, holding a 5-star Visit Wales rating and Go North Wales Hotel of the Year 2025. One of very few castle-style hotels in Wales on the water, with direct views across the Menai Strait to Snowdonia.
A Gothic French château on the banks of the Menai Strait — one of the more dramatic places you can sleep in Wales. Sir John Hay-Williams built it between 1849 and 1851, modelling it on the châteaux of Blois, Chambord, and Chenonceau after his wife Lady Sarah sketched them on their travels through the Loire Valley. The result is a Grade II*-listed fantasy of turrets, stained-glass windows, painted ceilings, and dark wood panelling, sitting on 3 acres of Victorian gardens that terrace down to a private beach. Weddings are the main business here, but it works as a straight hotel stay too — and Le Dragon Rouge is genuinely worth the drive.

Lodge Sea View Double Room
Spacious ensuite rooms in the lodge with the best views the lodge has to offer — Menai Strait and mountains. More contemporary feel than the château proper, good for guests who prefer modern amenities without the full Gothic immersion.
DoubleLodge Standard Double Room
Modern and contemporary rooms in the Rhianfa Lodge with an ensuite bathroom. Views over the château gardens and mountains beyond. Quieter and slightly more private than the main building.
DoubleLodge Standard Room (No Ensuite)
In the Rhianfa Lodge, a separate building about 50 metres from the main château via a garden path (note: steps involved). Cosy with a double bed, modern furnishings, and lovely views of the Menai Strait and mountains. Shared bathrooms — the trade-off for the most accessible price point.
DoubleLodge Suite
The lodge's standout room: framed by a beautiful bay window with mountain and sea views, a super king bed, a proper seating area, and an ensuite bathroom with a roll-top bath. More peaceful than the château rooms, and the views are comparable.
Super KingSea View Double Room
In the main château with the key upgrade being the view — looking out over the Menai Strait. Timeless décor, en-suite bathroom, flat-screen TV, and complimentary WiFi. Worth the premium if you want to wake up to the water.
DoubleStable Flat Cottage
A one-bedroom self-catering retreat in the grounds with classic farmhouse décor, a fully equipped kitchen/living area, and a charming balcony. Sleeps 2. Quiet and private with access to château facilities.

In the historic main château building. Cosy and individually styled with a comfortable king size bed, en-suite shower room, and premium period-inspired furnishings. No sea view but you're inside the actual château.
KingSuite
Spacious château suite with an en-suite shower room, a proper seating area, and views over the water. More room to spread out than the double rooms, and the château atmosphere is fully present.
Superior Suite — Duke or Duchess
The top of the château room hierarchy, and the rooms guests write home about. Choose between the Duke Suite with a four-poster bed, or the Duchess Suite with a leather sleigh bed. Both have roll-top baths inside the suite itself — in the Duchess, the bathtub sits in the bay window looking straight out over the Menai Strait. Two of the most-requested rooms in the hotel.
