Berlin Mitte
Industrial-chic with a Berlin edge. Dramatic public spaces — raw walls, graffiti, exposed structure — contrast with calm, practical bedrooms that prioritize rest over statement. More character than the price point suggests.

Why It Matters
The building has genuine Cold War history as a former Stasi station, which the design leans into without being gimmicky. Barcelona firm Denis Von Arend stripped it back to its bones and brought in Berlin street artists to mark each floor — it feels genuinely local rather than generic boutique. Listed in both Tablet Hotels and the Michelin Guide for solid value in this category.
A 1911 building that once housed a tie factory, a jewellery workshop, and — most intriguingly — a Stasi police station. The Catalonia Berlin Mitte opened in 2014 after a conversion by Barcelona design firm Denis Von Arend, and it leans hard into its industrial bones: exposed beams, raw concrete walls, and floor-by-floor graffiti murals commissioned from local Berlin street artists. The rooms themselves are a deliberate counterpoint — quiet, parquet-floored, restrained, and functionally solid. Good mid-range value in central Mitte, with a genuinely praised breakfast buffet and an all-day bar-restaurant opening onto a courtyard terrace with a pergola.
