Castillo del Buen Amor
Medieval castle with soulful, family-run character. Antique furniture, coffered ceilings, Mudéjar brick domes, and secret passageways. Zero corporate polish. The property's owner Pilar Fernández de Trocóniz also makes wine on site. Atmosphere is romantic, rural, and genuinely historic — not themed.

Why It Matters
One of the very few working medieval fortresses in Spain operating as a boutique hotel, held by the same family for over 60 years. Michelin Key holder. Awarded Best Wine Tourism Establishment in Spain (ACEVIN, 2024). Declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1931. The 100-hectare private estate includes a 7-hectare working organic vineyard producing four estate wines.
A real fortress — thick stone walls, a moat, towers you can actually sleep in — turned into a boutique hotel by a family who bought it as a ruin in 1958 and spent decades restoring it. The castle dates to the 11th century and was converted into a palace in the 15th century by the Bishop of Salamanca, Alonso de Fonseca, who kept his mistress here and gave rise to the name 'Buen Amor' (Good Love). It opened as a hotel in 2003. Today, 40 rooms spread across the original building, no two alike: some carved into the 11th-century guard passage with moat-facing windows, others topped by private towers with 360° views. The restaurant runs out of the old stone vaults, and there's a saltwater pool in the former moat.

Archery sessions available at the estate.
The private estate hosts a wide variety of bird species: golden orioles, storks, herons, little owls, tawny owls, barn owls, kestrels, hoopoes, and many others. No light pollution at night. Introductory ornithology workshops can be arranged for groups on request.
Self-guided tour of the castle's historical spaces using a provided map, covering the 11th-century military fortress sections and the 15th-century palace conversion. Armoury, courtyards, towers, once-secret passageways — the whole thing. Guests have free access at any time; the castle is only open to day visitors on Monday mornings.
Bike rental available on request. Routes across the estate and rural roads surrounding the castle. Gentle terrain, suitable for families.
Falconry sessions mentioned as an available activity at the estate. Must be arranged in advance.
Walks through the castle's curated gardens and the French hedge labyrinth. The estate also features a lagoon and a pine forest. Good for birdwatching — goldfinches, nightingales, storks, barn owls, and lesser kestrels have all been recorded here.
The kitchen garden sits next to the castle. In summer, guests can visit at sunset to see produce growing — vegetables, herbs — from which the restaurant sources ingredients. Reinforces the estate's zero-kilometer food philosophy.
The hotel prepares picnic baskets upon request that guests can take to any corner of the estate gardens. Available at specific times and must be requested in advance.
The hotel's flagship romantic package: a private candlelit dinner for two in a castle tower, with a dedicated butler. The most theatrical way to spend an evening here.
Being deep in the Castilian countryside, there is essentially no light pollution. Clear nights reveal the full night sky. Guided stargazing workshops for groups can be arranged on request.
Walking tour of the 7-hectare organic vineyard within the 100-hectare estate. Guide explains varieties, cultivation, pruning and harvesting. Can also be done at sunset with a glass of estate wine in hand.
Guided visit to the estate winery, seeing the winemaking process firsthand, followed by a tasting of 5 estate wines (Tempranillo, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and others) paired with local tapas. The castle won Best Wine Tourism Establishment in Spain (ACEVIN 2024).

Breakfast in bed available. Full room service menu for meals.
A 'mysterious library' described in multiple sources as one of the castle's atmospheric common spaces. Part of the seven historic living rooms furnished with antiques and family collections.
