Castello di Guarene
Maximally ornate Piedmontese Baroque — think crystal chandeliers, crackling fireplaces, frescoed ceilings by Francesco Casoli and Giacomo Rappa, and East India Company tapestries. It's a museum you sleep in, and that's entirely the point.

Why It Matters
One of Italy's most historically intact castle hotels. A Relais & Châteaux member with 15 protected historic rooms, a centuries-old library of rare volumes, formal Italian baroque gardens designed by the count himself in 1740, and a hilltop balcony that overlooks more of UNESCO-designated Piedmont than almost any other single viewpoint in the region.
An 18th-century Baroque palace that Count Carlo Giacinto Roero di Guarene began building in 1726, Castello di Guarene sits at the top of a hill with 60-plus kilometers of UNESCO-listed Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato territory spread out below it. Just 12 rooms occupy the historic structure — all of them loaded with original frescoes, silk or silk-velvet tapestries, antique furniture, and marble bathrooms. After a meticulous three-year conservation restoration completed in 2014, the castle reopened as a luxury hotel without stripping a single era-appropriate detail from its rooms.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The formal Italian baroque gardens, originally designed by Count Carlo Giacinto Roero in 1740, have been restored to their original layout. Topiary, sculpted hedges, and geometric flowerbeds surround the castle. The lower 'Maneggio' garden faces toward Barbaresco.
The castle director offers guided tours through the historic rooms, covering the frescoes by Francesco Casoli, Giacomo Rappa, Bernardo Gallori, and Giuseppe Palladino, plus the 15 protected historic rooms. Book at the front desk. Reportedly offered complimentarily.
Three centuries of rare and valuable volumes — available to visit by reservation only. One of the more unusual hotel amenities in Piedmont.
The hotel is 12 minutes from Alba, the world center of white truffle. October and November see the peak season. The restaurant prominently features Alba white truffle on the menu when in season.
The castle sits within easy reach of Barolo, Barbaresco, and several acclaimed Roero producers. The concierge can assist with winery visits; the hotel is also within 5–6 km of several local wineries including Tenuta Carretta and Fabrizio Battaglino.
The castle hosts weddings and private events in the historic halls and gardens. Modern AV technology has been integrated with the period interior. The restaurant and sommelier team handle catering.
