Castello Banfi - Il Borgo
Old-world Tuscan estate with serious wine credentials. Stone arches, vaulted ceilings, timber beams, floral accents, hand-decorated rooms — it looks lived-in and regal at once. Calm and quiet; the pace here is deliberately slow.
Book La Sala dei Grappoli well in advance — the Michelin star fills it up fast, and the hotel strongly discourages walk-ins
Why It Matters
One of Italy's great wine-estate hotels: a 1-Michelin-Star restaurant (La Sala dei Grappoli, six consecutive stars), Relais & Châteaux membership, 1 Michelin Key (2025), a 14th-century glass museum on the grounds, and an actual whale skeleton unearthed on the property. Only 14 rooms, which means it stays genuinely intimate.
Il Borgo sits inside a working 7,100-acre Brunello wine estate, carved out of 17th- and 18th-century peasant cottages clustered beneath the crenellated walls of the 12th-century Castello di Poggio alle Mura. The castello itself runs the winery; the borgo houses 14 generously sized rooms and suites. Your stay comes with a sommelier-led vineyard and winery tour, a tasting, and a discount at the estate wine shop. Add a 1-Michelin-Star restaurant (La Sala dei Grappoli, reconfirmed 2026), a heated infinity pool overlooking the vines, and you have one of the most complete wine-country escapes in all of Italy.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The Giovanni F. Mariani Museum of Bottle and Glass, housed inside the 14th-century Castello di Poggio alle Mura. Traces the history of glass production from the 5th century to the present day. There's also a Balsameria (balsamic vinegar cellar) under the castle's north wing.
A 4-hour hands-on class at the estate farmhouse, set among the vineyards. Make homemade pasta, a main course, and dessert using local ingredients, then sit down and eat what you made paired with Banfi wines. Small groups only.
Approximately 1-hour balloon flight over the estate, meeting point at the winery. Total experience is about 2 hours. Weather dependent. Not suitable for pregnant guests or children under 6; minimum height 120 cm.
Bianchi mountain bikes and electric bikes available free to guests, with helmet and water bottle included. A 32 km bike route covers 550 m elevation change (medium difficulty). Brunello Trailer trekking route runs about 8 km through vineyards and wineries — easy, 2–3 hours. The 7,000-acre property has mapped trails to explore without ever seeing a car.
8-hour tour with an English-speaking private driver in an air-conditioned car or van with Wi-Fi and soft drinks. Three routes: Brunello di Montalcino Tour (two wineries + Montalcino town + Abbey of Sant'Antimo), Val d'Orcia Tour (Montepulciano, Pienza), or Siena/Monteriggioni/San Gimignano. Lunch at a local trattoria included.
A guided Vespa ride through medieval villages in the Chianti hills. A guide leads the group to charming countryside spots across Tuscany.
Drive a vintage Fiat 500 through the Val d'Orcia with an experienced guide. Lunch at a typical trattoria in Pienza included. Hotel pick-up and drop-off included.
A guided tour of Banfi's production facilities and vineyards, led by one of the estate's sommeliers. Included with every stay. Ends with a formal wine tasting.
A half-day excursion to a private truffle reserve near San Giovanni d'Asso (about 30 minutes from the hotel). An expert truffle hunter and his dogs guide the walk. Ends with a Tuscan truffle lunch.
A private picnic among the estate vineyards, with gourmet food and local wines. Good for celebrating special occasions or simply taking in the landscape at a slow pace.
A 3-hour painting workshop with artist Lisa Brancatisano, who guides guests through techniques for creating contemporary art. All materials provided.
