A castle first recorded in 990 AD, Castel Maurn sits quietly in South Tyrol's Val Pusteria and operates as an eight-suite luxury retreat — one of the most exclusive small properties in the Italian Alps. Owner Walter Peintner meticulously restored the building in 2020/2021, keeping the frescoed ceilings, 16th-century wooden paneling, herringbone floors, and vaulted halls intact while threading clean contemporary design throughout. Only 20 guests can stay at any one time, and hosts Walter and Sabine run it with the attentiveness of a private home rather than a hotel.
