Why It Matters
The building itself is the story. Commissioned by Mariano Fuster as a gift to his wife, it was the most expensive house in Barcelona at the time of completion. Lluis Domènech i Montaner — the same architect behind the Palau de la Música Catalana (UNESCO World Heritage) — designed it with three ornate facades. It featured in Woody Allen's 2007 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona and is part of the European Art Nouveau Route. The on-site Aleia restaurant holds a Michelin star.
Casa Fuster is one of Barcelona's great Modernista buildings — designed in 1908 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner as a private home and converted into a hotel in 2004. It sits right at the top of Passeig de Gràcia where Eixample meets Gràcia, giving it one of the best addresses in the city. The 105 rooms and suites lean into the building's Art Nouveau bones with warm tones, picture windows, and period-inspired furnishings. And then there's the Michelin-starred Aleia restaurant, a rooftop pool with Tibidabo views, and a jazz club that has pulled everyone from Woody Allen's band to Adrian Cunningham through its doors.
