Casa do Conto - Arts & Residence
Brutalist-meets-bourgeois. Industrial concrete aesthetics with deliberate nods to the building's 19th-century past — azulejo-tiled exteriors, reclaimed corrugated-steel plates, period antique mirrors. Cultural and literary in its DNA.
Suite Residence NG on the third floor has the best views — Porto's terracotta rooftops from a panoramic balcony flooded with sunlight.
Why It Matters
Every suite ceiling is engraved in low relief with a story by one of six Porto authors (Filipa Leal, Álvaro Domingues, Jorge Figueira, André Tavares, Pedro Bandeira, Nuno Grande). The architecture is a genuine design statement — listed on Mr & Mrs Smith, Michelin Guide, and Tablet Hotels. The fire-and-rebuild origin story adds to the mythology of the place.
A six-suite boutique hotel inside a radically reimagined 19th-century bourgeois house in Porto's Cedofeita neighbourhood. The architect duo Alexandra and Nuno Grande — working under their firm Pedra Líquida — gutted and rebuilt the place after a fire days before the original 2009 opening. What came back is sharply Brutalist: raw concrete ceilings etched with stories written by six local Porto authors, burnished steel fittings, muted greys, and antique leather furniture scavenged from around the city. Six rooms. No restaurant. No pool. But it's full of character in a way most hotels aren't.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The sister hotel hosts a regular program: book and CD launches, small concerts, fashion shows, film screenings, exhibitions, and artistic residencies. Casa do Conto guests have access. Check with reception for what's on during your stay.
No pool at Casa do Conto itself. Guests are welcome to use the outdoor pool at sister hotel Tipografia do Conto, approximately a five-minute walk away on Rua Álvares Cabral 28. The pool is unheated and exterior.
The hotel itself is the exhibit. Six suites, each with a different story etched into the concrete ceiling by a Porto author. Reclaimed corrugated-steel plates, antique azulejo tile tables, and period leather furniture from around the city. Worth a slow walk through all the spaces.
The CONTO Arts & Residence group offers guided walk tours of Porto on request. Contact info@casadoconto.com to arrange — details and pricing given directly by the hotel.
