Why It Matters
One of only two hotels in all of LA with direct beach access (sister property Shutters on the Beach is the other). The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, celebrating its centennial in 2026. Three two-story penthouse suites occupy what were once the hotel's original 1920s racquetball courts.
A 1926 Italian Renaissance Revival landmark — one of only two hotels in the LA area that sits directly on Santa Monica Beach. Originally built as an exclusive private beach club for Hollywood's elite, it underwent a $50 million restoration and reopened as a hotel in 1999. Today it pairs that grand historic exterior with a contemporary coastal interior designed by Michael S. Smith, sweeping Pacific views, and a genuinely glamorous atmosphere that Shutters on the Beach next door simply doesn't have.

Pacific View Suite

A large living area with fireplace and queen sofa bed makes it genuinely suitable for families or small groups. The master bath is a proper indulgence — hydrothermal tub, Dyson hairdryer, and ocean-facing window.

Three two-story suites occupy the hotel's private top floor — originally built as racquetball courts in the 1920s. The soaring ceilings are the giveaway. The master bath has a hydrothermal spa tub and Dyson hairdryer. Complete privacy — the entire floor is just these three suites.
