The lodge rooms share bathrooms — they're 21+ only and the most affordable option, but not for the privacy-minded

Why It Matters

Part of the National Register of Historic Places (Central Whidbey Island Historic District). It's the self-declared 'Unofficial Official Lodge of Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve.' 30 rooms across three distinct building types, each with its own design identity. No TVs, a cocktail phone that connects lodge guests directly to the bartender, and a dock where you can arrive by boat or floatplane in summer.

A 1907 Madrona-log lodge sitting right on the shores of Penn Cove, Captain Whidbey is one of the most historically layered properties in the Pacific Northwest. Built from timber and stone found on-site, it's been a boarding house, post office, girl's school, and general store before landing on its current life as a thoughtfully reimagined inn. The new owners — Portland hoteliers with an Ace Hotels architect on the team — leaned hard into the character rather than papering over it: creaky floorboards, a 100-year-old stone fireplace, hidden staircases, and mismatched historic photos are features, not flaws.

Where You'll Stay

3 room types available

Historic Lodge Rooms
standard

Historic Lodge Rooms

Rooms upstairs in the original 1907 Madrona-log building. Virtually unchanged since the inn opened — creaky floorboards, ensuite sinks, shared men's and women's bathrooms down the hall, and the occasional sound of glasses clinking from the tavern below. Views look out over Penn Cove or the chef's garden. These are for the most adventurous guests, not the most private. Curated library on the floor. 21+ only, no pets.

Lagoon Rooms

Lagoon Rooms

Fourteen rooms in a newer building overlooking the lagoon lawn. The design pulls from Scandinavian modernism and mid-century industrial designers like Aino Aalto and Mira Nakashima — sustainably sourced finishes, Mongolian cashmere goat hair carpet, hand-crafted furniture by John Gnorski, and hand-stitched woven fiber blankets by Hannah Ruth Levi. Each has a daybed for slow mornings of birdwatching over the lagoon. Private bathrooms, quieter than the lodge.

Penn Cove Cabins

Four standalone cabins perched above Penn Cove, each designed in collaboration with a different Pacific Northwest brand: Filson (the classic outdoor outfitter), Seattle design shop Glasswing, Vancouver studio We The Nomads, and Langley's Edit Whidbey. Every cabin has a fireplace, King bed, and private porches. You'll probably spot a whale. Cabin stays include pour-over coffee, a breakfast board for two, porterage service, and a handful of curated Penn Cove gifts.
