Cambria Beach Lodge
Surf-shack chic. Stylish yet unassuming — the kind of place that takes the California road-trip fantasy seriously without being precious about it. The design references are specific: adventure culture, winemakers, local artists. Not a spa retreat.

Why It Matters
First lifestyle boutique hotel in Cambria, reimagined from a motel in 2016 by Common Thread Hotels. Featured in Architectural Digest, Sunset, Coastal Living, and Tablet Hotels/Michelin Guide. The rooftop sky deck offers some of the best sunset and whale-watching views on this stretch of the Central Coast.
A former roadside motel on Highway 1 that got a full lifestyle overhaul in 2016, Cambria Beach Lodge sits directly across from Moonstone Beach and leans hard into California coastal adventure. Iron & Resin artwork on the walls, Faribault wool blankets on the beds, and complimentary Linus cruiser bikes parked out front. All 27 rooms carry the same sun-bleached-wood-and-turquoise DNA, with Malin+Goetz products in the oversized showers and a locally curated minibar stocked with Paso Robles wines and Cattaneo Bros. jerky.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Hop on one of the hotel's cruiser bikes and take the coastal bike path alongside Highway 1 from Moonstone Beach through downtown Cambria. Helmets available on request.
The elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas on the shore of San Simeon is about 10 minutes north — hundreds of giant seals (up to 8,000 lbs) hauled out on the beach year-round.
The rooftop sky deck provides a clear Pacific sightline — binoculars are part of the in-room adventure kit. Prime whale-watching season on this coast runs December through April.
William Randolph Hearst's legendary hilltop estate — 'La Cuesta Encantada' — is about 5 miles north. The hotel staff can point you in the right direction. Budget 2–3 hours for a tour.
The 2-mile bluffs trail runs directly in front of the hotel along Moonstone Beach. The beach is made of smooth pebbles rather than sand — good for tidepooling, watching surfers, and hunting for actual moonstones.
The Paso Robles wine region is less than 30 minutes east. The hotel minibar stocks local bottles from Field Recordings and Halter Ranch as a preview. Staff can recommend tasting rooms.
Consistent, sandy-bottom break directly across the street, best for longboarding. Surf wax is available in the lobby minibar.
