Why It Matters
One of Barcelona's most talked-about design hotels, featured in Condé Nast Traveler, Architectural Digest, the FT, and The Times. Founded and run by Christian Schallert, whose family now operates the in-house Café Schallert. A genuinely independent project in a city full of chain hotels.
A 20-room boutique in Poble Sec, a real neighbourhood at the foot of Montjuïc that most tourists walk straight past. The 1870 building's original facade is fully intact; inside, architect Inma Rábano gutted it and Australian design duo Blankslate rebuilt it around their passion for Geoffrey Bawa's tropical modernism. Think concrete prefab sinks against glossy turquoise tiles, raw terracotta, warm wood floors, and lighting from Atelier Areti. There's an outdoor pool, a sauna, free yoga classes, and Café Schallert serving Austrian pastries and specialty coffee. Small rooms — the entry-level Poolside Standard is just 13m² — but the communal spaces and terrace make it feel far bigger.
