Why It Matters
London's oldest luxury hotel (est. 1832), never renamed or rebuilt. The only Rocco Forte property in London. Home to one of Mayfair's most storied cocktail bars (the Donovan Bar) and the city's most historically significant Afternoon Tea. The Kipling Suite — at 155 sq m — is where Rudyard Kipling penned parts of The Jungle Book.
London's oldest continuously operating luxury hotel, founded in 1832 by James and Sarah Brown — former domestic servants — and never once renamed, rebuilt, or relocated. The current property stitches together 13 connected Georgian townhouses on Albemarle Street in Mayfair. Rocco Forte took over in 2003 and put it through a £24 million renovation (Olga Polizzi's handiwork throughout), and it reopened in December 2005 looking sharper than it had in decades. Rudyard Kipling wrote here. Franklin Roosevelt honeymooned here. Queen Victoria took her afternoon tea here. The bones of the place are extraordinary — original plasterwork ceilings, stained glass, and oak panelling — and the 115 rooms are all individually decorated, each one slightly different from the last.

Every Thursday evening, the historic Drawing Room transforms into an intimate jazz speakeasy. Leading London jazz musicians perform in bespoke, close-quarters sets. Cocktails served throughout. A much more intimate alternative to a standard jazz bar.
Sunday dinner at Charlie's restaurant with live jazz from 18:30 to 22:00. A proper sit-down affair with the full à la carte menu running alongside the music. Reservations recommended.
