Britannia Hotel
Grand European hotel with Norwegian soul. Think gilded dining rooms, mirrored walls, chandeliers, and bespoke furniture — but with a genuine warmth and Nordic restraint that keeps it from tipping into pomposity. Very much a local institution as much as a traveller destination.
Book Speilsalen as early as possible — it only takes reservations up to 3 months in advance by default, but overnight packages let you plan further ahead.
Why It Matters
The only hotel in Trondheim with a Michelin-starred restaurant (Speilsalen, one star since 2020). Member of The Leading Hotels of the World, American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, and Historic Hotels Worldwide. Repeatedly recognised by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards (2020, 2021, 2024) and Travel + Leisure's It List. The Tower Suite — a 220 sqm penthouse built into the hotel's iconic dome — has a gold bathtub, a grand piano, and a private wine cellar.
The Britannia has been Trondheim's grande dame since 1870, when British aristocrats came north to fish the salmon rivers. After a full three-year, $150 million renovation, it reopened in April 2019 as one of Norway's most serious luxury hotels. Every room has a Hästens bed and a Carrara marble bathroom. There's a Michelin-starred restaurant on site, a 1,400 sqm spa with a heated lap pool, and six distinct food and drink concepts — which makes the building feel less like a hotel with restaurants and more like a small city block worth exploring.
