Brimstone is a 16-suite adult-only hotel on the 35-acre Langdale Estate, deep in the Great Langdale valley. The name is no accident — the estate was once a gunpowder works, and sulphur (brimstone, element 16) inspired both the name and the suite count. The design is bold: slate, glass, and natural timber stack up into something that looks more Zermatt than Cumbria, and every room comes with an emperor bed, a freestanding bath, and private balcony. Duet Suite
Built for two — and doubles down on it. Two freestanding slipper baths, a double shower room, twin sinks, and two TVs. The lounge and bathroom are arranged to let both guests enjoy the full suite experience rather than one bath being an afterthought. Good for couples who don't want to fight over who gets the bath.
Fireside Suite
The winter favourite. A proper log fire is the centrepiece — the kind guests actually want burning all weekend. Open private balcony looks out over the estate. Freestanding bath, emperor bed, the full Brimstone package. Rooms with fires book up months ahead, especially on winter weekends.
Mezzanine Loft Suite
The most architecturally dramatic room in the hotel. Two full floors, with the bedroom on a mezzanine gallery above the living space. An emperor bed up top, a roll-top freestanding bath in the lounge below, and enough space that guests report it feeling larger than some houses. Particularly popular for romantic getaways.
Plush Room
The entry point at Brimstone — and still a seriously good room. A freestanding roll-top bath in the main bedroom, emperor bed, and private balcony. Spacious by any normal hotel standard. No log fire here (that's reserved for the suites), but everything else — spa access, Reading Room, Bootroom — is included. Smart value for the address.
Spa Suite
The standout room. An oversized oval bath with a ceiling waterfall tap sits centre-stage in the bathroom, positioned to face bifold doors that open onto a dual-aspect private balcony overlooking the estate. There's a log burner in both the lounge and bathroom, a separate large walk-in shower, his-and-hers sinks, and a massive emperor bed in Egyptian cotton. Local slate and wood give it a calming, contemporary feel.

The hotel sits at the foot of some of the Lake District's most celebrated Wainwright peaks, including the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell, and Harrison Stickle. The hotel has produced a bespoke hand-drawn map of the Wainwrights within reach, and hosts provide route advice and kit. A classic 9.5-mile Langdale circular is popular with guests.
