Bracken Hide Hotel
Scandi-Highland wilderness resort. Think matted pinewood walls, Harris tweed headboards, black-painted whisky bar with gold shelving, and big landscape windows. Cosy and design-led, but also genuinely remote-feeling despite being 20 minutes' walk from Portree town centre.
Book a Tier 1 (lowest level) cabin if visiting in winter or during wet weather — the upper-tier hides require a steep climb that becomes less fun in driving Scottish rain.
Why It Matters
One of the only dedicated wilderness cabin resorts on the Isle of Skye. Built on the site of the old Portree Golf Course with £8m+ investment over six years. Combines Nordic wellness (Estonian saunas, cold plunge pool) with a serious modern Scottish restaurant and an extensive whisky bar — a rare combination this far north.
Bracken Hide sits on 52 acres of the old Portree Golf Course, a four-star wilderness resort made up of 45 peaked timber cabins — called Hides — scattered across a hillside above Portree Bay. The main hub building is the centrepiece: floor-to-ceiling windows framing Loch Portree and the Sound of Raasay, a modern Scottish restaurant, an intimate whisky bar, Estonian saunas, a wild plunge pool, and a mezzanine screening lounge. It's a genuinely ambitious concept for the Inner Hebrides, and the views alone justify the trip.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Two Estonian saunas and a wild outdoor plunge pool with views across Portree Bay to the Sound of Raasay. Sessions are bookable and particularly popular after hiking days. The plunge pool is unheated — cold even in summer.
A mezzanine-level lounge inside the hub building with a large-screen TV and lay-flat seating. Designed for movie nights and family (or group) downtime. Cosy seating, warm colours, and a relaxed vibe.
The hillside site has minimal light pollution — on clear nights, the star visibility is exceptional. Upper-tier cabins particularly benefit from this, though the paths are unlit so a torch is essential.
The property is about a 20-minute walk downhill into Portree town centre, giving access to all the restaurants, pubs, shops and harbour without needing a car. The return walk is uphill — worth keeping in mind after dinner.
