Bovey Castle is a lovingly restored Art Deco revival manor house — not a medieval fortress, which is part of the point. First opened in 1930 by Great Western Railways, it sits on 275 acres inside Dartmoor National Park with 60 hotel rooms and 22 self-catering lodges. The 5 AA Red Star rating and 3 AA Rosette restaurant signal serious intent, but the vibe is more muddy boots at breakfast, golf spikes at lunch, black tie at dinner than stiff country house formality.
