Bio Habitat Hotel
Eco-luxe architecture meets Andean wilderness. Think floor-to-ceiling glass, warm wood, and organic materials — not rustic, not a lodge. The design is deliberately minimalist so the forest does the decorating. Wellness is woven into everything here, from daily yoga classes to spa rituals using local herbs. The vibe is intentional and a little spiritual, but never preachy.
The Nest habitats are a 10-minute walk from the lobby through the forest — request a golf cart transfer if arriving late at night with luggage
Why It Matters
One of Colombia's most architecturally distinctive eco-hotels, set in the UNESCO-recognized Coffee Cultural Landscape. Each habitat is completely independent — no shared walls, no neighbors in sight — and several include private plunge pools with Andes mountain views. The hotel operates on solar energy, runs wetland water treatment, and practices permaculture on-site. The Basto Resto Bar under chef María Clara is a genuine slow-food operation drawing ingredients from its own agroecological garden.
Bio Habitat Hotel sits at the highest point of the Armenia–Circasia mountain road, surrounded by over 160,000 m² of native Andean forest in Colombia's Coffee Cultural Landscape. The 28 independent habitats — split between mountain-facing and forest-facing orientations — are glass-walled, architecturally modernist structures built on platforms into the hillside, giving the sensation of being suspended in the forest. It's part of the AKEN SOUL Collection and a partner of Sonesta International Hotels.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A guided hike with a resident biologist into one of the best-preserved forests in the coffee region, the Barbas River Canyon. Home to three families of howler monkeys, 300+ bird species, and impressive plant diversity. Steep, potentially muddy trail — this is a serious immersion in Andean jungle, not a casual stroll.
The hotel's own music project, bringing invited artists to perform at sunset around the communal outdoor fire pit. Described as a ritual connecting guests with organic and instrumental sounds. Held periodically — check the hotel events calendar for upcoming dates.
A 1.4 km guided trail through the hotel property, taking around 45 minutes. Covers the hotel's sustainable operations: solar energy production, wetland water treatment, permaculture systems, and native tree planting. A good first-morning orientation before heading off-property.
Guided birdwatching on the hotel's forest, where over 150 bird species have been characterized on-site. Led by a biologist. One of the most compelling reasons to stay here — the property's native forest is genuinely rich habitat.
After-dark exploration of the hotel's forest ecosystem. Look for amphibians, night monkeys, and insects in their natural nocturnal environment. Unusual offering that sets Bio Habitat apart from most eco-hotels in the region.
From cacao plantation to artisanal chocolate making. Combines mountain scenery with a hands-on tasting of local cacao varieties.
Visit to a local sustainable coffee field. Participate in the harvest and enjoy a guided cupping session revealing the flavors of the region. The hotel works with farms in the area — ask staff for which farm is currently in season.
Guided tour of Salento, Filandia, and Circasia — three nearby Andean towns known for their colorful architecture, artisan craft, and local gastronomy. The hotel can arrange private transport and guides.
Visit to the Cocora Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the world's tallest wax palms. The hotel arranges transport and can include guides. About 35 minutes from the hotel.
A scenic 4x4 tour ascending to 3,500 meters above sea level to reach high-altitude wax palm forests and the habitat of the yellow-eared parrot. Colombia's national tree in its natural setting, above the cloud line.
An ascent from 2,400m to 3,450m, starting among wax palms and finishing at the Morrogacho summit with panoramic views across the region. Physically demanding but rewarding.
A route through high Andean cloud forest toward Los Nevados National Natural Park, ending at the Estrella de Agua reserve in the wilderness. Multi-hour experience for serious nature travelers.
A 2-hour horseback ride through the Aguas Claras Natural Reserve along the Cocora Valley, at altitudes between 2,100 and 2,500 meters. The trail passes native flora and fauna, a wax palm restoration trail, and includes planting Colombia's national tree. A proper engagement with the landscape, not a tourist pony ride.
Into Cocora Valley to witness congregations of hummingbirds among wax palms, cloud forest, and Andean streams. A genuinely photogenic experience for wildlife and nature photographers.
Exploration of Colombia's páramo ecosystem — a high-altitude biome unique to the tropical Andes, protected and serving as a critical water source. Yellow landscape, extraordinary wildlife.
