Why It Matters
In 2024, Bettei Otozure became the only Michelin Key hotel in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The property also hosted the Japan–Russia summit between Prime Minister Abe and President Putin in 2016. At just 18 rooms and with every suite featuring a private outdoor onsen, it punches well above its weight for exclusivity relative to price.
Bettei Otozure is a 18-room luxury ryokan in Nagato Yumoto Onsen, at the far western end of Honshu in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Designed by architect Hiroshi Naito, the property sits along the Otozure River with floor-to-ceiling windows framing mountain and forest views. Rooms blend tatami floors and Japanese cypress with genuinely comfortable Western beds — this is not the austere futon-on-tatami ryokan experience, but a modern take where the architecture does the heavy lifting. The onsen is the draw: every room has its own private open-air natural hot-spring bath, and the communal baths in both Bettei Otozure and its larger sister property Otani Sanso (connected by enclosed walkway) are open to Otozure guests.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Bettei Otozure guests have access to the communal Grand Bath at Otozure, plus all communal baths at the sister ryokan Otani Sanso, reached via a private enclosed walkway. Otani Sanso guests do not have reciprocal access to Otozure's baths.
Every room at Bettei Otozure has its own private outdoor onsen bath with natural Nagato Yumoto hot spring water. The baths can be used at any time during the stay.
A fitness centre directly connected to the Grand Bath complex.
The property features a manicured Japanese garden with private walkways, and a courtyard water garden near the entrance. The teppanyaki restaurant Choshu overlooks a dramatically lit garden with waterfalls.
The lobby library stocks books, DVDs, and CDs available to borrow during your stay. A business centre with communication equipment is adjacent.
The open-air baths in guest rooms and communal areas allow stargazing from the hot spring water, especially clear on cold nights in the mountains far from city light pollution.
Green tea is prepared and served in the traditional Tea House upon arrival and during the stay. The experience is treated as a contemplative ritual rooted in the philosophy of wabi — finding beauty in imperfection.
