Ask for a front room at check-in — they face the Matterhorn and Besso peaks and are worth a small upgrade

Why It Matters

ICOMOS Historic Hotel of the Year 2001. One of Switzerland's best-preserved grand alpine hotels, in continuous operation since 1860. The first-floor Salon Vallet holds a private collection of etchings by painter Ed Vallet and a ceiling painted by Raphaël Ritz. Gault&Milau 13/20 for restaurant Chez Ida. Member of Swiss Historic Hotels and Historic Hotels of Europe.

A living Alpine museum founded in 1859 and still operating at 1,652m in the Val d'Anniviers. The white façade with sky-blue shutters looks exactly as it did in the 19th century. Inside, it's all original parquet floors, antique furniture, and painted ceilings — including a salon with a ceiling by Raphaël Ritz, cousin of César Ritz. The Buchs family took over in 1995 and restored it with obsessive care. In 2004 they added a 200m² mountain spa. Small, owner-managed, and seasonal.
