Why It Matters
ICOMOS Historic Hotel of the Year 2001. One of Switzerland's best-preserved grand alpine hotels, in continuous operation since 1860. The first-floor Salon Vallet holds a private collection of etchings by painter Ed Vallet and a ceiling painted by Raphaël Ritz. Gault&Milau 13/20 for restaurant Chez Ida. A living Alpine museum founded in 1859 and still operating at 1,652m in the Val d'Anniviers. The white façade with sky-blue shutters looks exactly as it did in the 19th century. Inside, it's all original parquet floors, antique furniture, and painted ceilings — including a salon with a ceiling by Raphaël Ritz, cousin of César Ritz. The Buchs family took over in 1995 and restored it with obsessive care. In 2004 they added a 200m² mountain spa. Small, owner-managed, and seasonal.

Historical Rooms
Original 19th-century rooms with preserved period decor, carved beds, waxed furniture, and arolla pine parquet flooring. Each is unique. Some feature free-standing bathtubs and period bathroom fittings.
Junior Suites
Spacious junior suites with separate sitting areas, antique furnishings, and a refined 19th-century aesthetic. Some of the most photogenic rooms in the house with generous proportions.
Marmotte Residence
One of four self-catering residences adjacent to the main hotel building. Ideal for families or longer stays, with kitchen facilities and independence from the hotel schedule.
Mayen
A traditional alpine chalet associated with the Bella Tola. 'Mayen' is a Valaisan term for a mid-mountain agricultural outbuilding — this one has been converted into private chalet accommodation.
North Rooms
Quieter rooms on the north side of the building. Individually decorated with antique furniture and original period details. No Matterhorn view from these rooms — they face the village side.
Nostalgic Rooms
Rooms styled around the nostalgic alpine aesthetic of the house — warm, individually furnished with vintage objects and antique pieces. A step up in character from the North rooms.
Suite Pierre Pont
The flagship suite, named after the hotel's founder Pierre Pont who built the original Bella Tola in 1859. The most spacious and prestigious accommodation in the main building.
Superior Rooms
Larger rooms with upgraded bathrooms featuring high-end fittings. Many face the front of the hotel with views toward the 4,000m Valais peaks and the Matterhorn. Premium bedding and bathrobes included.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The St-Luc/Chandolin domain offers 75km of ski slopes and 14 lifts, reaching up to 3,000m altitude. Snow-reliable and relatively uncrowded compared to the larger Valais resorts. The hotel provides a free shuttle to the funicular.
The unspoiled terrain around St-Luc and Val d'Anniviers offers excellent snowshoeing routes with views of the Matterhorn and Valais 4,000m peaks.
St-Luc is Switzerland's 'Stars Resort'. The FXB Observatory sits above the village and runs nighttime astronomy sessions. The Planets Trail (Chemin des Planètes) is a 6.5km path from St-Luc to the Hotel Weisshorn, with scale models of the solar system at each planet's proportional distance.
The hotel's ground-floor salons are extraordinary. The Salon Vallet has wood paneling, original parquet, and a ceiling by Raphaël Ritz. The Salon 1900 has its original plaster-rose ceiling intact. Guest books go back to 1859. A quiet exploration of the house is itself an activity.
St-Luc has some of Switzerland's finest mountain bike trails, with 150km of well-marked paths. Bicycle hire is available near the property.
Over 150km of marked hiking paths in Val d'Anniviers, including high-altitude routes to the Bella Tola peak (3,025m), Zinal, and across the Meiden Pass. The Planet Trail runs through the valley.
