Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri
Rustic historic harbour inn with serious culinary credentials. Weathered timber buildings, classic KNAG furniture, sea views from nearly every window. Low-key and unhurried, but the kitchen punches well above its weight.

Why It Matters
One of Norway's oldest operating guesthouses — continuously hosting travelers since 1670. The restaurant earned international fame when Ørjan Johannessen won the Bocuse d'Or world culinary championship in 2015, putting this tiny fishing village on the global food map. A member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2018 and listed on Tablet Hotels.
Opened in 1670 under a royal decree by King Christian IV, Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri is a family-run harbor inn on the island of Austevoll — about 50 minutes by boat from Bergen. Three white timber buildings cluster around the quay, home to 48 rooms and a restaurant helmed by twin brothers Ørjan and Arnt Johannessen: one a Bocuse d'Or gold medalist, the other Norway's Chef of the Year 2014. The food is the main event here, built around whatever the fisherman pulls off the boat that morning, wild sheep from the surrounding moorlands, and herbs foraged from the nearby forest.
