Bayerischer Hof Munich
Old-world European grand hotel with serious contemporary design credibility — Axel Vervoordt-designed rooms and restaurants sit alongside original Art Deco interiors and the surviving Hall of Mirrors. The spa fills up on weekend afternoons — arrive at 6pm after the dinner crowd leaves for a much quieter experience
Why It Matters
Independently owned for over 125 years, venue for the annual Munich Security Conference, home to a 2-Michelin-star restaurant, and one of the few grand hotels in Europe that operates its own theater and jazz nightclub on the premises.
One of Germany's most storied grand hotels, the Bayerischer Hof has been anchoring Munich's Promenadeplatz since 1841. Commissioned by King Ludwig I, family-owned since 1897, and still run by managing partner Innegrit Volkhardt, it operates like its own small city: 337 rooms, 74 suites, five restaurants (including a 2-Michelin-star flagship), six bars, a nightclub with genuine jazz legends on the bill, a theater, a cinema lounge, and a 1,300 sqm rooftop spa. A $200 million multi-year renovation shaped by Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt has brought the interiors up to the present without erasing the building's grand-hotel DNA.
