Why It Matters
The hotel exists because of one of France's most unusual migration histories: Barcelonnette sent waves of emigrants to Mexico from the early 1800s onward, many of whom returned wealthy and built extravagant villas. The Azteca is one of those villas, and it doubles as an art gallery. Listed by both the Michelin Guide and Gault&Millau, and holds the French national 'Qualité Tourisme' label.
A 3-star boutique hotel built into a former 1888 Mexican villa in the heart of Barcelonnette, the Azteca is a living tribute to the town's famous emigration story — generations of locals who left for Mexico in the 19th century and returned wealthy, building grand villas like this one. The 19th-century wood panelling, marble fireplaces, and rotating art gallery make it feel more like a cultured family home than a standard hotel. Owners Rémi and Delphine Guibal have leaned into that warmth; the 27 rooms spread across the original villa wing and a modern annex, with the old wing being far more atmospheric.
