Why It Matters
The first hotel in the Artist Residence group, and the one that defined its ethos. Rooms were literally traded for art — local names like Ben Eine, Pure Evil, Blek le Rat, and Joe Webb all have work here. It holds a 1 Michelin Key (2025). No two rooms are the same, and over half have sea views of the iconic skeleton of the West Pier.
Artist Residence Brighton is the original property in the Artist Residence group — the one that started the whole thing. Set across two Grade II listed Regency townhouses at the top of Regency Square, it has 27 individually decorated rooms where local artists were given free lodging in exchange for their work on the walls. The result is something no interior designer could have manufactured: genuinely individual spaces with murals, limited-edition prints, and bespoke furniture that actually feels lived-in. Blake's, the ground-floor cocktail bar and breakfast spot, doubles as a neighbourhood hangout open to all, with sea views straight at the West Pier.

Located on the lower ground floor beneath the bar. Has a double bedroom plus a wood-clad secret cabin with two snug double beds — good for a trio. Quirky and fun, but be honest with yourself about noise sensitivity: it's under the restaurant and bar.

The best group room in Brighton for the money. Tucked below the cafe and restaurant with four bunk beds plus a separate king-size bedroom, a living area with sofa and armchairs, a dining table, a roll-top bath, walk-in rainfall shower, and a separate WC. Noise from above is possible on busy nights.

Bigger Balcony Sea View
Same eclectic character as the Bigger Sea View but with a private balcony overlooking the sea. Double bed, large shower, seating area. One of the most-requested rooms in the house.

The step-up rooms. Eclectically decorated with vintage furniture, limited-edition prints, a seating area for two, and a king-size bed. The standout feature: a cast iron bath right in the bedroom alongside a large rainfall shower. One is on the fourth floor — worth it for the elevated sea views.

Original murals on the walls, floor-to-ceiling window opening onto a private sea-view balcony, antique wooden shutters. Double bed. En-suite with shower over bath. One of the better mid-range options for the balcony alone.

Mid-range rooms with bold murals by Charlie Anderson, Bonnie & Clyde, and Ben Allen. Double or twin beds (specify at booking), walk-in rainfall shower. A sofabed for a third guest can be added for £30/night.

The entry-level room. Eclectically decorated with vintage furniture and limited-edition prints. Double bed, en-suite shower room. Small but thoughtfully done — these feel more like a friend's spare room than a budget box.

The top-floor apartment on the fourth floor of the adjacent townhouse — the most spacious option in the building. Large open-plan living room, dining room, kitchenette, double bed in the master, bunk beds in a second bedroom, roll-top bath, and rainfall shower. Sweeping seafront and West Pier views.

An evening at Blake's is itself a Brighton activity. Knowledgeable bartenders craft seasonally focused cocktails while you sit with a view of the West Pier. Open to all — not just hotel guests.
The hotel is a 2-minute walk from Brighton beach. The seafront, the i360 observation tower, and the Brighton Palace Pier are all within easy walking distance.
The hotel itself functions as a gallery — rooms decorated by named artists including Ben Eine, Pure Evil, Blek le Rat, Joe Webb, Charlie Anderson. Guests engage with original work simply by staying.
