Deco Hotel Montana
Theatrical Art Deco — bold geometric interiors, deep reds, rich wood veneers — but with genuine warmth and a local crowd mixed in. Not a design hotel that takes itself too seriously. The bars pull non-guests in off the street, and the staff are well-known for being actually human.

Why It Matters
One of the best-known 4-star hotels in German-speaking Switzerland, with a funicular railway as its front door, six different bar and restaurant concepts on-site, and Penthouse Spa Suites with private outdoor whirlpools on the rooftop terrace. The Scala Restaurant holds 15 Gault&Millau points. The Louis Bar is an Ardbeg Embassy — one of the whisky brand's official outposts worldwide.
Built in 1909–1910 as a palatial hillside hotel, Art Deco Montana opened in 1910 — predating the style it's now synonymous with. The building was redesigned through the 1990s and 2000s by Zurich architect Pia Maria Schmid, turning the whole property into a cohesive Art Deco statement, from lobby to tower suites. Sixty-two rooms and suites sit above Lucerne's lake promenade, reached by what the hotel calls the world's shortest funicular railway — 60 seconds from street to lobby. The bar scene alone is worth the stay: a 130-bottle Scotch collection in the Louis Bar, 60-plus rums in the Hemingway Lounge, and a Gault&Millau-rated restaurant with an outdoor terrace overlooking Lake Lucerne.
