Why It Matters
One of Portugal's most design-literate sustainable hotels. Genuinely committed to eco principles since day one — geothermal radiant-floor heating, solar-heated pool, organic kitchen garden, zero single-use plastics, built on a former chicken farm using reclaimed materials. The hotel runs a nightly communal bonfire, daily yoga, and garden-to-table cooking sessions included in the stay. Family villas on the same grounds give it a second life as a multi-generational resort without any of the sterile resort feel.
Areias do Seixo is a concrete-and-glass eco-boutique hotel perched above the Atlantic on Portugal's Silver Coast, about an hour north of Lisbon. It was built on the site of an old chicken farm, using reclaimed materials, regional stone, pebble, and wood — and it looks nothing like any hotel you've stayed in before. The adults-only suites have no air-conditioning, no TVs, and no minibars. What they do have: log fireplaces, jacuzzi tubs, private terraces facing the dunes, and a nightly Circle of Fire bonfire on the coast that guests gather around at sunset.

Land Garden Suite
The one outlier in the suite lineup — no sea view here, but a private garden instead. Named Jasmine. In the mornings, sunlight hits the olive trees on the terrace and the garden comes alive. Quieter and more intimate than the ocean-facing rooms; the 70 m² private terrace is genuinely huge. Same fireplace and jacuzzi tub setup as the others.

Four larger suites themed around North African and Cape Verdean sensory journeys — think fire and sea hues, stargazing jacuzzis, and in one suite (Nha Cretcheu) a sunken bath for two. Each suite has its own story: Oxalá faces the sunset; Ouro and Mi Ma Bô have outdoor jacuzzis for starlit soaks; Nha Cretcheu adds a monsoon rainfall shower. All have log fireplaces and private terraces facing the sea.

Ocean Signature Superior Pool Villa (4-bedroom)
The flagship villa category. Three villas accommodating up to 8 guests, each with a private outdoor pool, fully equipped kitchen, fireplace, washing machine, and barbecue area. Private terraces with ocean views. Pets welcome (up to 2, max 15 kg each, €25/night cleaning fee). Children of all ages permitted.
Plunge Pool Townhouse (3-bedroom)
Six townhouse-style units with plunge pools, 3 bedrooms, and up to 6 guests. More compact than the full pool villas but with the same self-catering amenities. Good option for families or groups who want something between a hotel room and a full villa.
Shelter
A luxury canvas tent positioned in the dunes — no internet, no walls between you and the sounds of the ocean and pines. Inside: a proper queen bed, a firewood stove for warmth, and a freestanding bathtub. The 21 m² wooden deck outside is private. Room service is available 24 hours. This is the most booking-in-advance unit on the property. Priced the same as the Love Superior Suites but genuinely different in character.

Nine suites in the main building with African-inspired decor — reclaimed wood, ethnic textiles, recycled steel drums, and Moroccan decorative pieces pulled together in a way that somehow works. Outside, a wooden terrace with an uninterrupted view over the ocean and dunes. Most have jacuzzis; some have just a deep soaking tub. No A/C; geothermal radiant heating and ceiling fans keep things comfortable.

Guests collect ingredients from the organic garden then cook lunch with the chef. Seasonal and hands-on — a different menu depending on what's ready to harvest.
