Arai Aparthotel Barcelona
Historic boutique aparthotel. Rustic grandeur meets urban apartment living — original 18th-century building materials everywhere, but modern and considered in execution. Not a party hotel. Quiet, art-forward, and suited to people who'd rather cook breakfast in their room than queue for a hotel buffet.
Book direct on the official website for extras: chocolate truffles on arrival, free entry to the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona
Why It Matters
One of the few upscale stays in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter that's actually housed in a genuine historic palace, not just adjacent to one. The building's ornamental sgraffito facade is listed heritage. Art from the private Clos Foundation collection is displayed throughout. The meeting room features an actual 5th-century Roman mosaic discovered during renovation.
The Arai sits inside a fully restored 18th-century palace known as Casa dels Quatre Rius — the House of the Four Rivers — named for the sgraffito fresco facade depicting allegorical figures of the Danube, Nile, Ganges, and Rio de la Plata. Inside, it's all exposed brick, stone walls, vaulted wooden-beam ceilings, and hydraulic tile floors. But the bathrooms are black slate with inlaid Indian silver pyrite, the toiletries are from The White Company, and every one of the 31 apartments comes with a full kitchen. It's a genuinely rare combination: proper Gothic Quarter history with the convenience of an aparthotel.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Works from the private Clos Foundation collection are displayed throughout the hotel's public spaces and corridors. The building itself also features restored ceiling frescoes, recovered carved stone lintels, and antique repurposed wood. It's a genuine collection, not hotel-lobby decoration.
Guests who book directly through the official hotel website receive complimentary entry to the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona. The museum is a short walk from the hotel.
A private meeting room decorated with a spectacular 5th-century Roman mosaic discovered during the building's renovation. 40 square meters of event space, available for meetings and private events with full hotel services.
Seasonal outdoor pool on the rooftop terrace with views of the Barcelona skyline. No food or drink service at the pool itself. Unheated — guest reviews note the water can be cold outside peak summer.
