Niseko
Ainu-inspired architectural villas with warm wood interiors, cathedral windows, and a deliberately slow, private pace. Glamping-meets-luxury with Relais & Chateaux-level service sensibility.
Book the half-board package — guest reviews consistently rave about the food quality at Ultimo, and one visiting French chef called it relais & château-level.
Why It Matters
One of the only properties in Niseko designed around Ainu architectural heritage, with only six villas available per night. The building silhouettes are genuinely striking — think steep gabled rooflines rising out of birch forest. Add a private Italian restaurant with a daily-changing tasting menu starting at ¥19,000 per person and butler service, and you have one of the most distinctive small lodgings in all of Japan.
Six architect-designed villas on a 9,200 sqm forested estate in Niseko, Hokkaido — each one a soaring two-story structure inspired by the traditional chise dwellings of the indigenous Ainu people. Architect Koichi Ishiguro gave them a peaked silhouette that reads like a kamakura snow hut when the whole compound stands side by side in winter. The villas are entirely private, limited to six groups per night, with personalized butler service, a 24-hour clubhouse, and an in-house Italian restaurant, Ultimo.
