ANA InterContinental Appi Kogen Resort
Refined Japanese mountain luxury. Design draws on traditional Washi paper, wood-grain finishes, and the 'Dragon Eye' local motif. Art is everywhere. There's even a 400-year-old Japanese beech tree inside the club lounge. It's intimate and deliberately curated — the antithesis of the large ski lodge.
Afternoon tea is available to non-hotel guests too — good if you're day-tripping from the ANA Crowne Plaza next door
Why It Matters
First MICHELIN Key hotel in the Tohoku region (awarded 2024, retained 2025). Four consecutive World Luxury Hotel Awards. All-Club InterContinental classification means every guest gets the full suite of perks — not just those in upgrades. One of the only ski-in/ski-out luxury properties in northern Japan.
Japan's first luxury resort in the Tohoku region, opened in 2022. Just 38 rooms and suites — all classified as Club InterContinental — packed into a three-floor building that sits directly on the Appi Kogen ski slopes. Every room has a slope view, and every stay includes welcome drinks, afternoon tea, apero time, and breakfast. Think less hotel, more private mountain refuge with proper five-star service.

Afternoon tea runs 3:00 PM–4:30 PM in the lobby lounge — included for all hotel guests. Apero time follows from 5:00 PM–6:00 PM. Both are served in the elegant lobby, and afternoon tea is also open to non-hotel guests.
A resort pass that unlocks MTB, fishing, gondola rides, swimming, karaoke, and kimono experiences across the Appi Kogen resort area. Pass holders also receive a ¥1,000 discount on Appi/Hachimantai tours. 24-hour access from noon on arrival day. Activities vary by season.
Off-site but affiliated 36-hole golf club covering 1,300,000 sq m. Par 144, with two 18-hole courses (Champion and Queen), each with two loops of nine holes, making use of the natural highland terrain.
Guided and self-guided nature tours around Appi Kogen, including the celebrated beech forest (recognized as a scenic landmark), Mt. Iwate views, and Fudo Waterfall. Best in spring through autumn when the highland greenery is fully out.
Natural hot spring baths on the top floor of the hotel — rock and hinoki cypress tubs with four-seasons mountain views. Open-air option available. Morning sessions offer a mountain panorama; nights are good for stargazing. Exclusive to hotel guests.
Ski-in/ski-out access directly from the hotel. APPI Snow Mountain Resort has 21 slopes, the majority long runs, with courses suited to all levels. Rentals, ski schools, and on-mountain restaurants are all available. The resort won World Ski Awards 'Japan's Best Ski Resort 2023.' Season typically runs from December through March.
