Amankila
Architecture-forward Balinese luxury. Stone, teak, and alang-alang thatch set against volcanic jungle and sea. Deeply quiet — no lobby bustle, no crowds. The kind of property where you genuinely lose track of time, partly because there are no clocks visible and partly because the scale is so human: 34 suites across a massive land footprint means the place always feels empty even when full.
Book an Ocean Pool Pavilion or Garden Pool Pavilion for a private nine-metre or standard pool — the step up from a standard pavilion is worth it for the added privacy.
Why It Matters
One of Aman's founding properties and a benchmark for how tropical resort architecture can integrate with landscape. The three-tier cascading infinity pool is iconic. East Bali — water palaces, Besakih Temple, village artisans — is far less touristed than the south, and Amankila is the natural base for that version of the island.
Amankila sits on a hillside above the Lombok Strait on Bali's far-east coast — about as far from the Seminyak crowd as you can get without leaving the island. The architecture is the star: 34 thatched pavilions and villas on stilts, connected by frangipani-lined walkways through the treetops, all angled toward sacred Mount Agung and a private black-sand beach below. The signature three-tier infinity pool steps down the hillside like a rice paddy, which tells you everything about how seriously this place takes design. Designed by Ed Tuttle and opened as one of Aman's earliest properties, it remains one of the chain's most scenically dramatic. Just plan for the 1.5-hour airport transfer.
