Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg
Grand baroque castle with contemporary interiors — think gilded history with sharp modern edges. Artwork by Dalí, Lüpertz, and A.R. Penck throughout. Baronial in scale but warmer in execution than you'd expect. The kind of place where the lobby has a concert grand piano in the presidential suite and the sauna has a starlit ceiling.

Why It Matters
2 Michelin-starred Restaurant Vendôme with chef Dennis Kuckuck (formerly Joachim Wissler who built its reputation over decades). The hotel holds 1 Michelin Key for accommodation. One of Germany's architecturally grandest baroque buildings converted to a hotel, with Goethe himself calling it 'unique.' Also holds Gault&Millau five red hats.
One of Germany's largest baroque castles turned into a 5-star hotel, sitting on a hilltop in Bensberg, 12 km from Cologne. Prince-Elector Johann Wilhelm II commissioned it in 1703 as a hunting lodge inspired by Versailles, but he died in 1716 before ever using it. After a €75 million renovation it opened as a grand hotel in 2000, and the interior was completely redesigned to win the Interior Design Award in 2016. The restaurant Vendôme holds 2 Michelin stars. Cologne is 30 minutes away by direct train from the station 3 minutes on foot.
